8th Annual Gala

Often a hot ticket, the opening night offers up a gala event. Hosted by Grammy Award winning vocalist Nancy Wilson, 8th Annual Gala kicks off the Conference on opening night with festivities Wednesday, Jan. 9. 2008. Senator Tommy Banks and Paquito D’Rivera will both receive IAJE President’s Awards.

NEA Jazz Masters

On Friday, January 11 at 8 p.m, the IAJE Conference will host the 2008 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Masters Awards Concert to honor Quincy Jones, Candido Camero, Tom McIntosh, Joe Wilder, Andrew Hill, and Gunther Schuller.

The NEA Jazz Masters award is the nation’s highest honor in this distinctly American art form. Each recipient is set to receive a $25,000 fellowship, and the opportunity to participate in other promotional and performance activities.

Sadly, one of the 2008 honorees, renowned pianist and composer, Andrew Hill, was notified of his receipt of the award shortly before his death. Hill spent 40 years composing, performing, recording, and mentoring young musicians. He earned acclaim for his innovative performances and compositions beginning in the 1960s.

In addition to Hill, the 2008 NEA Jazz Masters are:

Candido Camero, rhythm instrumentalist;

Quincy Jones, bandleader;

Tom McIntosh, composer-arranger;

Joe Wilder; Trumpeter

Gunther Schuller, classical and jazz composer-arranger who is the recipient of the A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Master Award for Jazz Advocacy.

Dr. Oscar Peterson will also receive a special award to for his unique role as a Canadian master of jazz, from the NEA in partnership with the Canadian Council for the Arts.

The awards concert will feature performances by Kurt Elling and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra conducted by David Baker. The concert and ceremony is open to all registered attendees.

In recognition of his innovative spirit, Jazz Wines is hosting a special reception for Candido Camero.

The International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) will inhabit the Canadian metropolis of Toronto when it returns to the great city for the 35th Annual Conference, from January 9-12, 2008.

Often in New York, this conference is the largest annual gathering for the global jazz community.

Toronto: L. Hayman

It’s a real joy to attend for jazz lovers. And for jazzwines.com, it is a real delight to have IAJE members in our home town. Jazzwines.com is based in Toronto proud to be a Patron of the IAJE.

The IAJE Conference was held in Toronto for the first time in 2003. IAJE says of Toronto, “Widely considered as one of the most diverse cities in the world, Toronto has much to offer IAJE conference participants. It is a cosmopolitan city with a vibrant nightlife, a strong jazz community, and a major scene for music, theatre, performing arts and architectural attractions such as the CN Tower and the Distillery District.“‘

Upwards of 7,000 are expected to attend this intense 4-day program for young and old. It involves educators, musicians, record executives, exhibitors, media, students and enthusiasts. Education, teacher training and outreach is at the heart of the IAJE conference.

The Conference also features Canada’s most respected and influential jazz performing artists. With the variety of clinics, concerts, and a 70,000 square-foot music industry exposition, the Conference offers something for everyone. There are more than 100 performances by internationally recognized artists and school groups and includes daily concerts featuring professional jazz artists representing the diversity of jazz worldwide, the IAJE Sisters In Jazz Collegiate All-Stars, the Clifford Brown/Stan Getz All-Stars, Community College All-Star Student Big Band, and a number of outstanding school ensembles from around the world.

Jazz Wines Welcome

To welcome IAJE and its members to Toronto, and to invite Torontonians into the jazz world, jazzwines.com is proud to offer a jazz lounge at Jamie Kennedy’s Wine Bar on January 9 and 10. In the evenings, people will find great food, a large wine list featuring the first public pouring of Jazz Wines The*Shiraz and fabulous live jazz performances at JK Wine Bar.

Jamie Kennedy will open up it’s side room to feature the enjoyable sounds of Steinway-artist and jazz pianist Lenore Raphael. Inspired by Oscar Peterson and often celebrated for channeling Thelonius Monk, Lenore plays piano in a range of styles. And for the jazzwines.com lounge, Lenore will have Ken Walker on bass with Rudy Lawless on drums. In addition, a very special guest, vocalist Denise Thimes has promised to join in on the Wednesday evening as well.
