Great place to be, in the side room of a fabulous wine bar with an enjoyable tasting menu.
What made the moment
The honoree, Candido Camero performed with Roberto Occhipinti on bass and Hilario Duran on piano.
Whose talent made the memory notable
Candido spoke about his age, 86, and played three congas to demonstrate his innovative techniques of coordinated independence. The drum heads were tuned so his percussion added to the melody. It was astounding to hear the music flow from his fast moving fingers, his “hands of fire” and even his use of elbow and arms to shape the sound. He was brilliant to watch and awesome to hear.
The performances by the other musicians made every moment of this memorable as well...!
Others involved
The room was packed with interested musicians, media, friends and jazz lovers so the air was electric when Candido got up to perform. Many of his jazz friends, such as the “poet Laureate of jazz”, Jon Hendricks and Giacomo Gates attended as surprise guests and then graced the stage to play or sing with the wonderful Lenore Raphael trio and special guest singer, Denise Thimes. Lenore’s Trio pleased everyone. And Denise drew in the audience and held us ready for more.
Remenyi helped bring in a Steinway piano for Lenore so her great playing translated into great sound. Ken Walker played base while Rudy Lawless kept the beat. Jazz Wines poured The Shiraz along with tastes from Jamie Kennedy’s tasting menu. Audience members took pictures, tuned into the music and enjoyed talking to one another.
Highlight of the experience
That so many had such a good time performing and improvising together, made this event more than I could have imagined it would be. People were in love with it all, and you could feel that in this first-ever Jazz Wines lounge.
