A Wine Family Tree

The Glaetzer family is brimming with winemaking know how.

The Glaetzer web site notes that Colin’s son, Ben is a Roseworthy graduate, an award winning winemakere and the youngest person ever inducted by the Barons of Barossa.

Colin’s twin brother John “has been Wolf Blass’s right-hand man since the early days in the ‘70s and chief red winemaker at Bilyara for a quarter of a century”.

Colin’s wife Judith, two other son’s, and daughter-in-law are each involved in the wine business.

Glaetzer Shiraz

Sourced from the Barossa Valley, the Glaetze Shiraz shows 1998 as its first vintage. The Glaetzers say, “The fruit for the Glaetzer Shiraz is sourced from the Ebenezer District...The vines are over 80 years old and extremely low yielding...fermented in open top vats before completing fermentation in American oak...18 months maturation”. And what they have is “superb flavour”...with extended cellaring recommended.

Winemaker

Colin Glaetzer (CEO)

It’s a lofty goal and a quiet philosophy, and it works.

The goal is to make “super premium” quality wine. And the philosophy is centered on the belief that quality comes from the earth, the grape, the grape growers, and an unwavering commitment on the part of the winemaker. It was in this vein, and with this mindset that Colin Glaezter finally opened his own label, Glaezter Wines, a family company, in 1995.

The Glaezter family roots have been firmly planted in the terroir of the Barossa Valley since 1888, when they arrived from Germany and became one of the earliest grape growers in the now famous region.

Almost one hundred years later, Colin Glaezter went to Roseworthy at the University of Adelaide to formally start his own winemaking story. He graduated in 1970, and worked until 1972 at Tyrell’s. He traveled to Riverland, Bristol and Beaune in Burgundy, then returned home to Barossa in 1985.

Quality comes from the earth, the grape, the grape growers, and an unwavering commitment

For over twenty years, Colin worked for Barossa Valley Estate creating the renowned E&E Black Pepper Shiraz and the Ebenezer. In 1995, with his winemaking wife and his three sons, he established Glaetzer wines.

A “Baron of Barossa”, Colin continues to achieve his lofty goals, working with his son Ben, to release excellent wines.
