John Duval (Chief Winemaker, Director)

John Duval grew up on a sheep farm outside Adelaide where he spent his early years among grape vines planted by his father and grandfather.

He attended the University of Adelaide and afterward completed a postgraduate diploma at Roseworthy.

John joined Penfolds in 1974. As Assistant Winemaker, he learned from then Managers, John Davoren and Kevin Schroeter, and grew under the guidance of Max Schubert and Chief Winemaker Don Ditter.

In 1986 John took over as Chief Winemaker. He held the position for the next 16 years, successfully shepherding the famous Grange and establishing himself as a world leading winemaker developing his own voice with such wines as the widely acclaimed RWT Shiraz.

John left Penfold’s in late 2002 to establish John Duval Wines. He had a few years of transition, as he passed the torch to a new generation.

Now consulting as a winemakers to leaders in Australia and abroad, John serves up his own wine, participates in the American brand Oriel and recently released Entity and Plexus.
