The International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC), is one of the preeminent wine competitions that brings wine and spirit makers from around the world to Surrey, England.

It is a chance for the top talents in their fields to meet and share the experiences and wisdoms of the trade.

Founded in 1969 by wine chemist Anton Massel, IWSC is unique for it’s two-tier testing; each wine is both technically analyzed as well as rated by a panel of 40 expert judges.

The rigorous technical experiments include monitoring levels of sulfur dioxide, iron, copper, acidity, sugar, alcohol, and microbiological testing to ensure that the bottle has no chemical impurities leading to quick deterioration after the competition.

The judges – a carefully selected panel of industry leaders and knowledgeable enthusiasts – sample over 6,000 wines from over 50 countries marking each entry on a carefully laid 100-point scale. All wines are judged by region, area, variety, style, type and vintage.

For winemakers celebrating and developing their talents with peers.

Wines receiving the required ratings are awarded either gold, silver or bronze medals. Highest marks receive “Best in Class” and move on to be retasted for consideration of a number of Special Trophies.

The competition is backed by a notable group of vice presidents made up of the most influential men and women in the trade, including Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, Miguel Torres, Marchese Piero Antinori, Robert Drouhin, Robert Mondavi, May de Lencquesaing, Kenneth Graham and Sir Anthony Greener.

But far from high-browed, this annual challenge is magnetic as a social retreat for winemakers celebrating and developing their talents with peers. Many thanks to them fot their benchmarking of taste and their shared interests in growing creative abilities and discovering great quality.
