Winemaker

Ben Glaetzer (Chief Winemaker)

"My father is a winemaker. My uncle is a winemaker. Older brother a winemaker, younger brother a winemaker. Sister-in-law is a winemaker. My father was a winemaker for 25 years for a company called Barossa Valley Estate. He started up the family business in ‘96, and I took it over in 2002,” said winemaker Ben Glaetzer surveying his career.

Ben Glaetzer grew up in and round the wine industry, starting his wine career as a cellar hand at Barossa Valley Estate; he developing overtime to become a winemaker at Tyrrell’s.

Though he had aspirations to be a surgeon, Ben returned instead to Barossa and to winemaking. Like his father before him, he enrolled in and graduated from the Oenology program at Roseworthy. After school he traveled extensively accumulating international vineyard experiences.

Now, Ben has settled in at the helm of his family’s business becoming world renown in his own right and the benchmark for up and coming winemakers. He is also presently the winemaker for Mitolo Wines at McLaren Vale and winemaker and shareholder at Heartland .

Superb example of cutting edge winemaking

Combining the family tradition of high quality, premimum wine making with his own modern vision, Ben has released such wines as Amon-Ra, Godolphin, and Mitolo.

Robert Parker Jr. recently described the ‘05 Amon-Ra Shiraz as “profound” and “a superb example of cutting edge winemaking ... on ancient Shiraz vines, “ and the 2005 Godolphin as “a beautiful marriage of power and elegance.”

Ben continues on with his simple goal in mind. ‘I’m looking for animated fruit. Wines have to stay alive. I want the fruit to smell fresh, alive and animated.’
