jazzwines.com is proud to honor NEA Master award recipient Candido Camero and welcome IAJE attendees to Toronto for the organization’s 35’th annual conference with a reception and live jazz event at Jamie Kennedy Wine Bar, a leading destination for gastronomic delights and for a fabulous wine list. We are also pleased to offer the first public pouring of Jazz Wines The Shiraz 2005 for this special reception.
A reception from 4pm-7pm will honor a real innovator in jazz, percussionist Candido Camero.
Credited with being the first percussionist to bring conga drumming to jazz, Candido Camero is also known for his contributions to the development of mambo and Afro-Cuban jazz. He is heralded as the father of the technique of coordinated independence. Equipped with three congas and a bongo, Candido was able to complement horn, piano, and bass lines with harmonic contributions.
In an event hosted by Jazz Wines’ founders, Leslie Hayman and Greg Homonylo, jazzwines.com is particularly proud to feature:
* The Oscar-Peterson-inspired talents of New York based pianist and Steinway artist, Lenore Raphael and friends; and
* An introductory tasting of Jazz Wines’ The Shiraz 2005 , a wine that will be featured at JK Wine Bar and as part of the LCBO Vintages program in 2008.
This January gathering brings top musical artists to one of Toronto’s pre-eminent destinations for live culture, great wine and fabulous food, Jamie Kennedy Wine Bar.
Located in the historic St. Lawrence Market district, Jamie Kennedy Wine Bar invites patrons to embrace gastronomy and enjoy the best Ontario has to offer. Tasting-size portions of local, naturally grown fare are offered with Sommelier-selected wines, available by the half as well as the full glass. The Wine Bar’s lively ambiance, geared towards fun and frivolity, provides the ideal backdrop for Chef Tobey Nemeth’s creations and Sommelier Jamie Drummond’s eclectic wine selections.
JK Wine Bar will feature The Shiraz for pairing with the fine food by Chef Nemeth during this special jazzwines.com experience and throughout the year.
MORE on Honoree Candido Camero
Born in 1921 in a Havana barrio called El Cerro, Candido was initially a multi-instrumentalist, showing facility on tres, guitar, and bass-these being key instruments in the popular Son music of the day. A switch to bongos and congas led to a six-year spell with the CMQ Radio Orchestra and a residency at the famed Cabaret Tropicana.
A move to New York City in 1946 put him in high demand hot property and he soon began working with such premier jazz and Latin artists, including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Machito and his Afro-Cubans, and Mario Bauza. Further recognition came in 1954, when Candido joined the Stan Kenton Big Band and toured coast to coast. He became a familiar figure on television, appearing on shows such as the Jackie Gleason Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, Mike Wallace, and on many specials. Candido’s long list of recorded work includes: sessions with Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Dr. Billy Taylor, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Count Basie, Elvin Jones, George Shearing, Lionel Hampton, Stan Getz, Wes Montgomery, Woody Herman, Doc Severinson, Marian McPartland, Lalo Schiffrin. Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente, Charlie Parker, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
