Origins : Henty
About
Henty is a remote region along the coast, just east of Coonawarra and Padthaway on the South Australia/Victoria boarder. It is one of the coolest wine growing regions of the Australian mainland, but with its good sunshine hours, Henty produces good cool climate varietals. Most vineyards are planted in weathered basalt with a gravelly loam topsoil on the north slopes of the regions gently rolling hills. A couple more recent plantings have found maritime sandy loam and patches of terra rosa, both over limestone. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, the classic grapes of Champagne, make up for almost half of the total plantings in the region.
