Merlot, the most widely planted red variety in Bordeaux, is used as both a blending grape and for varietals wines. There is record of its use as early as 1784 and by the 19th century it was being regularly planted in the Medoc on the Right Bank of the Gironde.  As an easy drinking wine, Merlot experience a boom in California in the 1980, and its wide appeal ensures its ongoing popularity today.

Although Merlot is used more and more as a blended wine, the famed Chateau Petrus is the stellar example of an excellent pure Merlot.

Merlot wines are straightforward and fruity with a plumy aroma and a soft, fleshy texture. Oak barrels can add a spicy black-currant-jam nose. It’s low acidity and low tannin makes it an ideal softening blend for the sterner Cabernet Sauvignon.
