Varietal : Viognier
About Viognier
Viogner, a white wine grape, is common in the Rhone region and the only varietal permitted in such wines as Condrieu and Chateu Grillet. An increase in planting, in the early 90’s, in California and Australia saved this finicky varietal from becoming extinct after unfortunate brushes with phylloxeria and WWI.
Viogner is challenging to grow, has a low yield and is vulnerable to diseases, but its appealling creamy mouth feel, floral aromas with overtones of tropical fruit make it a wine to watch.
